Hockey autobiographies have a bit of a mixed track record. Just because a player was dynamic and entertaining on the ice does not mean their life story is all that interesting. Mark Messier was one of the best hockey players to play the game and has become a legend in two different cities, so I was interested to see what stories he would share about his career. This is the first book I have read from the prolific and well loved author Robert Dugoni. After reading this book I know I definitely need to read more of his work. This is an emotional and powerful story. It is told in three timelines, 1967, 1979, and 2015. Vincent is the central figure. He meets two Viet Nam war vets at his summer job right after high school. This is a touching story about three woman and their surprising connections. All of their stories pull on your heart strings. As you read about what has brought the three women together you see how they have come to this stage of their lives. It is great to see the bonds and friendship that they form. I think I liked Krystal the most. Jocelyn made some questionable decisions but overall all of the women are likeable and resilient.

Where his story differs from the thousands of other kids that have tried to make the NFL, is that Conley never played organized football at any age before college. Lucky for him he was trying to make it as a kicker,
