Review of Colored Television

** I definitely struggled a bit with this book. Jane is a biracial woman and author who has spent ten years working on her latest book. At present, she is on sabbatical from her job as a college professor so she can finish her latest book. Her painter husband, Lenny, seems to bring no income into the family, so they are house-sitting for a year in a fancy LA home of a friend. I alternated between liking Jane and being frustrated with her. She was taking advantage of the luxuries of her friend’s house in many ways but seemed to feel entitled to do so. When her book isn’t at all what her editor wants she fails to tell her husband this. She then secretly pursues what she hopes will be her foray into television writing while lying to her husband about what she is doing. In amongst all this she is trying to parent her two young children. Neither Lenny or Jane seem to understand how to balance finances and for much of the book are on two different paths in life. I did learn more about the feelings and problems with being biracial and I thank the author with identifying and explaining the challenges biracial people face. Overall I definitely liked parts of the book but some parts were just frustrating.
